What Is SS202?
SS202 is part of the 200-series stainless steel family. These grades were developed as alternatives to 300-series (SS304, SS316) in periods of high nickel prices, because they replace some of the nickel with manganese and nitrogen.
SS202 composition:
- Chromium: 17–19%
- Nickel: 4–6% (SS304 has 8–10.5% — significantly higher)
- Manganese: 7.5–10% (SS304 has only 2% — the key difference)
- Carbon: 0.15% max
The lower nickel content is why SS202 costs less. Nickel is an expensive alloying element and its market price is volatile.
How SS202 and SS304 Compare
| Property | SS202 | SS304 |
|---|---|---|
| Chromium | 17–19% | 18–20% |
| Nickel | 4–6% | 8–10.5% |
| Manganese | 7.5–10% | 2% max |
| Tensile Strength (min) | 515 MPa | 515 MPa |
| Yield Strength (min) | 275 MPa | 205 MPa |
| Elongation | 40% | 40% |
| Corrosion Resistance | Moderate | Good |
| Weldability | Good | Excellent |
An interesting observation: SS202 actually has a higher yield strength than SS304. For structural applications, it is not a weaker steel — it is a stronger one in terms of proof strength.
Where SS202 Performs Well
SS202 is genuinely suitable for:
- Indoor and low-humidity environments: Structural frames, machine bases, shelving, storage racks, equipment supports in dry indoor environments. Corrosion is not a concern here and SS202 performs identically to SS304.
- Architectural and decorative applications (non-coastal): Interior railings, balustrades, furniture frames, showcase displays, and decorative components in cities well away from the coast. The appearance is identical to SS304 and the performance in this environment is adequate.
- General fabrication where corrosion resistance is secondary: Brackets, supports, jigs, fixtures, templates, and general engineering components where the primary requirement is strength and workability, not corrosion resistance.
- Food service (dry side): Equipment frames, cabinet structures, trolleys, and storage units in food operations where there is no direct food or liquid contact.
Where SS202 Is NOT Suitable
Do not use SS202 where:
- Coastal environments: Within 5–10km of the sea, atmospheric chloride levels are high enough to pit and stain SS202 over time. SS304 minimum, SS316 preferred.
- Direct chemical exposure: Any application with acids, chlorides, cleaning chemicals, or industrial process fluids. SS202's lower nickel content reduces its resistance to chemical attack.
- Direct food contact in wet applications: Equipment that constantly contacts food, beverages, or cleaning chemicals should use SS304 or SS316. SS202 may stain or pit in these conditions.
- Outdoor applications in industrial areas: Factory environments with sulfur dioxide, chlorides, or other airborne corrosives are aggressive. SS304 handles this better.
- Pharmaceutical and medical applications: These sectors mandate SS304 minimum, SS316L preferred. SS202 is not acceptable.

Our Recommendation to Buyers
If your application is genuinely indoor, dry, and non-critical for corrosion — SS202 is a smart, cost-effective choice. The steel industry in Gujarat uses enormous quantities of SS202 for exactly these applications, and it performs well.
If there is any doubt about the environment — specify SS304. The additional cost is modest and the protection is real.
If you tell us your application, our team will tell you honestly whether SS202 is appropriate or whether the extra cost of SS304 or SS316 is justified.
